Protection is crucial when using a mountain bike or dirt bike. No one can ride without falling. That is a fact and undeniable. Try to decrease the chance of injury. Legs and arms also need to be protected but not as much. You organs and spine should be the most important parts. Keep the amount of gear to a minimum but make sure you have the most protection on the parts which need it. It also helps if all of your gear works well together and fits in place.
