In martial arts competition, well in the inter-discipline competitions anyway, it is a necessity that the athletes wear their individual uniforms. And for international contests many of these players have flag patches on them so that they know precisely what nation they represent. But there are also occasions where these patches can also be seen on uniforms on local events. And the reason for this is basic, it's largely because of pride of their country as well as of the art that they are practicing which makes these athletes proudly
