2011 saw over 3,800 runners from 25 different countries competing in the 9th annual Kilimanjaro marathon. Professional and amateur runners alike run in the shadows of Mt Kilimanjaro through patches of forest, local villages, local farms and coffee plantations. The marathon takes place in the small town of Moshi, which lies just south of the Mountain where runners start and finish in the town's main stadium.
