The Various Horse Communication Sounds

If you've been around horses, you'll be used to it: the piercing whinny that heralds the approaching arrival of the day's feed. Horses don't have an intensive range of vocal effects to play with, and you could be familiar with many of them. Do you recognise the significance of every equine sound? Whinny: Horses whinny to proclaim another horse's presence. This sound is loud and intended to be heard over long distances. Even the weaklings in the bunch can jack up the volume considerably.
