The Fourteen Tribes of Galway
From the middle of the thirteenth century to the end of the eighteenth century, fourteen powerful merchant families controlled Galway. In 1484 King Richard III of England granted them the right to rule Galway Ireland. They were patriotic to the English throne. They ruled with minor interference for many years. With this liberty they constructed a booming port on the westward coast of Ireland that was truly spectacular. Oliver Cromwell called these families "tribes".
